Bohemian Velvet Floor Pillows

I am on a DIY kick.  Like most artists, I go through my highs and my lows.  Sometimes I find myself overwhelmed with inspirations and other times I am grasping for creativity.  Aren't we all a little mad here?  I have been wanting to make these velvet floor pillows for awhile.  I guess this is about as Fall as I will get.

You know I love velvet anything.  I love it even more when they are faded jewel tones.  These are super easy to make and trust me, I am an amateur sewer.  In about one hour, I sewed three of these bad boys.  I added these pretty tassels for more boho vibe.

These pillows will be in Aurora's new room as her tea party floor pillows.

They look gorgeous on her bed too.

I made this huge wall art out of an old painting I found at Goodwill for $10.  Every sassy pants need her own anthem.  So this is what you will need for these velvety floor pillows.

-a yard of cotton velvet
-four tassels
-the same color thread as your fabric
-sewing machine <optional but it makes life easier>
-24 inches by 24 inches pillow form < I got these at Joann's fabric for 40% off>

First I cut two squares of 26 inches by 26 inches.  Put the right sides together with the tassel in each corner as such.

Sew three sides and leave one side opens to insert your pillow form.  Once you finish sewing the three sides, turn the case the right side out.  Insert your pillow form and hand stitch the last opening.  Now if I were a better sewer, I am sure there are better ways to sew these floor pillows but this was just a lazy girl's way of doing it.

And if you are going to have a tea party, you might as well do it on velvet pillows.  Crowns are optional but always preferred.

Love,
Victoria

  3. Hi Victoria, your sewing skills were just fine on a project like this and indeed they add a whole lot of wow-ness!! To Aurora's room! I bet she watched with excitement to what was to unfold with beauty to her new room.

I can fix you a bit of inspiration Victoria as to making them even easier and no hand stitching at all for a closure.... You take your 24 x 24 but add about 8 more inches on length, fold over the extra inches making your square at 24 x 24 it's inside out of course. You will have one side with a no sew fold and and you sew all 3 sides closed, now because you have over lapped the fabric with extra length whe. You inside it to the right side you have a pocket. You will just separate the pocket and suff the pillow insert into the shame and the fold will cover your pillow. There will be a fold opening on the back side like and envelope.
This pillow is tucked inside and easy to remove the pillow for cleaning to then place the pillow back into the envelope of the pillow, I made some shams like this and you will find them showing the fold on the back side as to how they turned out in my solids on etsy, it will show all the pictures in now it looks from front to back side. You don't need a wide extra hem seam because you will stitch around the pillow with an over cast stitch at the edge of the fabric. You will love making them like this, it really is easy and allows your pillows to be removed and placed back in with out any sewing to close them up again and easy cleaning. You can still add all your tassels on the right side because when you inside out the sham it will have the tassels sewn in place.

I hope this makes sense to you but go look at my shams it shows the opening that over laps each end and it will open like a pouch. Perfect closure. Hope this helps on the making of more for you.

I too am sewing with velvets these days French butter yellow velvet brocades, I have posted them it's my Christmas stockings, custom pattern and all... You could even make your girls velvet stockings that match their pillow velvet :)

    1. Thank you, Jennelise. I am still waiting for her portrait and it is going to be amazing. I can't wait for that. I have been like this since high school when I started sculpting. Highs then lows then chasing the highs again. I know all creative people go through that.
