Rise and Fall of the roses

Every gardening season I look forward to the return of my roses.  One day they are simply all green with little buds then after a heavy rain, the whole garden just explode in colors with roses.

I have different varieties of hybrid roses.  I wish I was brave enough to grow tea roses and antique roses but I am a bit intimidated by them.  One of my favorite roses is New Dawn climbing rose.  I wish they bloom as profusely as drift roses but I will take what I can get.

This was a new rose I added to my rose garden this year.  I find its coral color to be so charming.

I like to think I am done adding garden beds for the season but I find myself flipping through gardening books and finding more and more inspirations to create more gardens.  It truly never end and I love every second of it.

Here is one of the new gardens I planted a few weeks ago.  It will be mostly roses as you walk down the path.  As you can see half of my yard is completely shaded with big trees.  Now that you have seen the rise of my roses, are you ready to see the fall of it?  For the last few days it has been raining non stop.  I woke up today to find my garden covered in rose petals and most of my plants flat on the ground....kinda sad and romantic at the same time. I spent this gloomy morning dead heading the roses.

My front garden just look like a sea of blue and purple.

I would love to hear about your favorite plants.  I am such a novice gardener and I am learning as I go.  I think I might just do one more garden bed...I swear I am done after that!! I have been dreaming of a peony and rose garden.  I want to plant a row of peonies in the back with roses in the front.  That way when peonies are done blooming then roses can take over.  Can you recommend any roses that do well in zone 6?  I love medium size roses that look and smell like roses but not as high maintenance.  My little gardeners are ready for their summer vacation.  I imagine a lot of the summer will be spent traveling or simply enjoying nature.  I am quiet looking forward to both.

Happy Gardening,  my friends.

Love,
Victoria

  4. Your garden is magical Victoria. What a gift you have given your girls. I still feel like a novice and I have been gardening for 25 yrs. I do not even know what drift roses are? I have always grown tea roses until a few years ago...when I added English Roses to our garden. Now they are my favorite. I am in a completely different zone than you so I do not have any tips. I wish we could have your down pour of rain. I have had to put umbrellas over our gardens and am deep watering just to keep them alive in this drought. It is so hot and dry already...with the temp. reaching the 100's. I wonder if you will ever try to plant a vegetable potager. My children only ate veggies from our garden when they were little. They loved growing their own food. You could begin with tomatoes and herbs. I do wish I had all your land...and flowers. So beautiful. xxo

  6. I'm envious of your garden, Victoria. It is absolutely gorgeous. Those roses are exquisite. I'd be of no help, as I'm a Texas gardener. Definitely plant peonies. I wish we could grow them here. Good luck, and keep on gardening. It's much work, but so worth the effort.

  11. Hi Victoria, and you were worried that the winter would play havoc on your gardens come back and new growth. To see those poor roses laying in a bed of mud must of felt like you had to get out there and lift them up. Roses are so hardy and very hard to kill them they just have this way of standing up and facing the sun no matter what they have been through.
As for the shaded areas you will have to look I to a shade garden one that can handle shade, it's a good area to relax I. With out to much direct sun.

Can you believe all the beauty in your growth and colours, it's like you have this little old English garden with such a cottage life. Your rains you could send us some this way.... We had one pre summer storm with down pouring rains all the way to Northern Ca. But not enough, and we don't expect to see any now for awhile. We here have garden hoses on drip for some day after day deep root watering, it's so dry and I am trying to keep the 3 planted pine trees alive they are almost 6 feet tall, and will mature to hide the view from the neighbors behind me.

Well my dear I have to congratulate you on your garden of beauty.
I have been looking at above ground gardens these past weeks, I want to get some of those big Galvanize water containers for cattle, sheep, and set a few in the yard and plant in the wild herbs so I have another demention to the height of the landscaping that is trying to fall all in place.
I want it to feel like a French garden with flea market treasures.

Perhaps you could hang some salvage chandeliers out in some of the trees letting them age that much more, and some cement urns, and statues? Always added charm like your garden bench.
The girls look so cute in their garden. Enjoy all the beauty it will be forever changing in life.

    Xoxo

    1. Oh Dore, I have so many plans for the garden. I want to add more containers and statues and water fountains. I just need to stop adding flowers first. As you know, gardening is an expensive hobby. We are planning to move to socal in a few years and I am sad just thinking about leaving my gardens!

  12. Your roses are stunning! So beautiful, Victoria, and your New Dawn is beyond beautiful. We have both climbing as well as other roses in our garden. Roses are a little temperamental, but I encourage you to try one of the tea roses, they are heavenly!

    1. Thank you so much. I get so tempted to plant tea roses. My local nursery was having a sale last week. Knowing me, I will probably start another rose garden just with tea roses.
