Every six years old needs a chic black room??

If you have been reading my blog for awhile, then you probably know that our house is as feminine as they come.  Almost everything is gilded or covered in faded velvet.  The house is filled with flowers on a regular basic.

Most days you will find me surrounded by vases and flowers.  It is my happy place.

Everything is soft and light....and dare I say romantic?  Now that I am done redoing Aurora's room, Bella is ready for me to redo hers.  I asked her two things she must have for her new room and this was her reply.  She wants her room to be black and to be draw on the wall.  My first reaction was NO and NO.  Then I did some more research and found these amazing rooms on pinterest.  Are you ready to go through my inspirations with me?

Jenna Lyons's bedroom was what convinced me.  I like how chic and modern it looks.  I know it looks nothing like my house but my baby got me with her "Well, you get to do what you want as an artist.  So why can't I?"  I am thinking glossy black chalk paint with white crown molding.

Call me crazy but I think white fireplace mantle against the black wall is a must.  She is six...I know but we don't really go by the rules now, do we?

A yummy seat or a swing for her to read?

I love the feel of this cozy room.  A chandelier and a rustic table to balance out the rest of the room?

I found a vintage bed frame for $15 that I am going to be recreating with appliques and upholstery.  I love how this bed looks but hers will be simple gold and pale pink or cream.  One of the wall will have a large gilded frame as a place for her to draw.  Of course she will needs one of her mama's chairs made just for her.  I am pretty crazy inspired by this chair.

So am I completely crazy or what?  I can't wait to get started!!! Happy October!

Love,
Victoria

  5. Victoria, I don't think your crazy and anything you do turns out beautiful. My daughter wanted her room black to smear with chalk, and I was willing to do it, but she changed her mind. Now she is thinking she wants to paint one of her pieces of furniture black. I did paint my spouses room black, and it looks beautiful and cozy and the funny thing is that most of my guests think it is the best room. xoxo Su

    1. Su, what she really wants is a Monster High Room.....it is this silly goth-ish show for kids if you can believe that. Since mama says No to any half hybrid monsters in ridiculous outfits, we are just going to settle on black wall.

  6. Victoria I say you're not crazy ... If Bella is au courant and I believe she is, Black walls embrace and add dramatic strength and will guide her into empowerment. I lean towards the moody and dramatic... My grand Dane asked us for an guitar and carrying case, on Monday we purchased a Black guitar. Black is a color. A dramatic and expressive color, yup you get it, good Mom - Bella's room will rock! Please post lots of photos!

  9. Good luck Victoria! One of my daughter's friends has one wall in her bedroom painted with black chalk paint. It's a striking look. Your home looks so pretty with all of the flowers and soft light shining in. And I love your pencil skirt and white shirt outfit! So stylish. Have a great weekend!

  12. Hi Victoria,
Always love seeing your beautiful pretty home. I am glad you are letting the girls have a say in their rooms. I know they will be soooo cute. You know chalk board paint does come in other colors besides black. Maybe Bella would find a sweet chalk board paint color instead of the black. I know whatever you do it will be fabulous.

  13. I totoally understand Victoria-my daughter only wants black and white in her room too! Her walls are white and I painted her antique Frenchy bed white with black details and she has picked out lots of black mirrors, pictures.... for her walls. Her bookshelves have a black background and her furniture is black. I think the BW look is pretty neat and I say go for it!

    1. Mary, I think you can add chalkboard paint to any paint colors and finishes now. So I am going to do that so she can draw on the walls. I have to do it before I get cold feet. lol

    1. Oh Kerrie, you are so dear! Thank you so much for your thoughts. I am going to work around having too much black in her room. She only has one full wall in her room and the rest has big windows so the room gets so much light.

  19. Oh my dear Victoria, you are so me, my inner me! I was the kind of mom who went through every design style there was being and interior designer and working on many years of estate model homes, and I can tell you I did a black dinning room with even black furnishings yes it all stood out and was not too much due to accent pieces and window trim and jams along with flooring being a light grey and it was well recieved.
When I see all these black room I swoon, fall in love, and years of art studies and mood altering designs, and the space it's in... Might I suggest if you go through with black, you do a low sheen paint, an eggshell/ satin it's easier on the eyes with a low sheen, as for where your daughter wants to draw, you can frame in the area as you stated and then paint it with a black low sheen slate paint that you can buy at lows, I use it all the time on clients and blackboard finishes, it dries like slate stone cool to the a pale pink would be less aggressive and calming.... My daughter is not a brave one at 22 years old now, I always had to keep her in a calm room, she was not into the frills when I was and always a child of age, I always said there is an adult living in my child, she always had a grown up room until now!
Her friends have very shabby chic rooms white white, and glitz of gold and bling. My daughter wanted aged weathered beach woods, washed in age, and white that made her experiance no distraction to her studies in how the brain works.

Any shade of blacks, to dark blues, and dark greys all have the same effect on ones mood, I think you are a fabulous Mom, one who embraces change and encourages it. I love the black inspiration rooms and if you were to do Bella's room black it would be fabulous, but I would make sure you frame in her window with wide moldings, you can do this so on the cheap with plank boards cut from simple pine and add some of your decorative embellishments on the corners...do all the molding in white satin paint, and add a white wood wall, you can do an exterior wood siding called T1-11 sand some of the roughness down and hang them like Sheetrock panels, they come in sheets of plywood that looks like a rough hewn planks of bead board, then that would just screw I to the studs through the drywall, and you can add her base board back on across the bottom and trim the top off in a corner round moulding trim or a strip of pine like the window trim. Paint that one wall white, white, do the three other walls head to side walls in black and that's where her head of the bed could rest on, the foot wall would be the plywood T1-11 paneled wall in white to rest her eyes on and ease up the black, it's that wall where gold and black aged galleries mirrors and paintings can hang, on the black main wall add white nite stands, both different on each side, even a chest of drawers can act as a nite stand on one side... A Christel lamp and white shade, accent her bending soft shabby chic pinks with her solids or florals, a great velvet chair in that wonderful blue u did for A's room and then both rooms will tie in with each other not feeling like Bella's room fell off the house.

I thinks this would settle fine on her well being, letting her express herself, but calming the harder edges of noticing a striking black vibe. And even thought your home is not these homes that inspire, you can pull it off I'm keeping with the vibe when accented and using black in a less formal way.
Do a white bed gold trim work and a black and white pillow ticking pillow that ties in all the walls and trim, you can then add a beaded velvet pillow, your only expense will be plywood T1-11 wall, they are 8"ft in higth and 4"ft width, you can get the last sheet on the wall cut buy Home Depot to the width you need, and wood trim for the window, and black eggshell finish paint and slate paint for her drawing area. The rest is all about painting lots of white to tie in with A's room :)

  21. Oh, I just read your response. I do know "Monster High". About four years ago, my daughter collected quite a few of the dolls. Their limbs just fall off! Lol No, I would not have a Monster High Room. Fortunately my daughter has never wanted a typical kid's room. She seems to realize some stuff you don't want to wear or put on your walls, but it is still fun to watch or collect. I love Dore's suggestions and I am sure your ideas are as brilliant as well. xoxo Su
